Toyota motor corp is usually the darling of the los Angeles Auto show, but testy relations with environmentalists and questions about quality are making the show a headache for the automaker this year. The Sequoia has a new 5.7-liter, V-8 engine that is more powerful — at 381 horsepower — and more fuel efficient than the old engine. It also has improved aerodynamics to save fuel, and the company plans to introduce an ethanol-capable version in the fall of 2008. Pricing wasn't announced for the new Sequoia, which goes on sale in December. Fuel economy numbers haven't been released, but Carter said they'll improve by about 12 percent over the old model, or 2 to 3 miles per gallon. The current Sequoia gets around 15 mpg in the city, compared with 21 mpg for the new hybrids from Chrysler and GM, including the Dodge Durango and Chrysler Aspen SUVs, the Chevrolet Tahoe SUV and Chevrolet Silverado pickup. Carter said Toyota plans to offer hybrid versions of every vehicle in its lineup and is also studying combinations such as hybrid diesels. But it hasn't managed to develop a system that works well in large trucks like GM and Chrysler did in their consortium with Daimler and BMW. Rap superstar Kanye West's mother has died at the age of 58.
Dr Donda West passed away on Saturday in a Los Angeles hospital.
A spokesperson for West confirmed the death saying "The family respectfully asks for privacy during this time of grief."
There was no word on the cause of her death.
Kanye had just landed in London when he learned of his mother's death. He immediately flew to Los Angeles to join fellow family members.
The rapper had a close relationship with his mother, who raised him as a single mother in Chicago after divorcing his father Ray, a former Black Panther, when Kanye was 3.
Kanye recorded a tribute to Donda called Hey Mama which appeared on his 2005 album Late Registration.
The song included the words "Hey Mama, I wanna scream so loud for you/ 'Cause I'm so proud of you/ Let me tell you what I'm about to do ... NEWPORT NEWS - Democrat John Miller defeated Republican Tricia Stall on Tuesday by about 700 votes in a closely watched race to replace Republican incumbent Sen. Marty Williams.
Miller got 15,469 votes, while Stall pulled in 14,747, according to unofficial results from the State Board of Elections.The race has gotten a lot of attention from lawmakers and political insiders because it could play a major role in determining which party has control of the Senate when lawmakers redraw political boundaries after the census in 2011. That intense scrutiny brought huge amounts of money into both campaigns, and led to loads of television commercials and campaign mailers littering the Peninsula. Miller has spent the majority of his campaign touting himself as a fiscal conservative and bringing up his links and working relationship with the GOP -- he has served as a longtime adviser and aid to Republican U.S. Sen. Paul Trible, who now heads up Christopher Newport University. Miller has reached out to the Republican centrists who backed Williams, by appealing to moderate voters from both parties and stressing that he will be a common sense, problem solver who will work across partisan lines to get things done."I'm very hopeful that we can change some things in Virginia still," Stall said. "There are a lot of citizens out there right now who are with me and who understand where we need to take Virginia." Stall has also gotten assistance on the campaign trail from her recently repaired relationship with the moderate members of the GOP who lead the Senate. Those lawmakers spent thousands trying to defend Williams from Stall's primary challenge, painting her as a extremist who was unfit for office. But with control of the Senate hanging over just a handful of close races, those same leaders have now endorsed Stall and helped fund her campaign because she could be the candidate that keeps Republicans in control of the agenda and the committees in the Senate. Ever since it began, I've run hot and cold on FX's "Nip/Tuck" (10 p.m. tonight). The sexual escapades of plastic surgeons Sean McNamara (Dylan Walsh) and especially Christian Troy (Julian McMahon) are often ridiculously over the top, but the series sometimes makes up for its excesses by tackling social issues or executing a shocking brilliant plot twist - I'm thinking of Ava (Famke Janssen), the "she" who turned out to be a "he" in season two. By season four, "Nip/Tuck" seemed to run out of steam and story, and then it ended with a surprise: The docs pulled up stakes from Miami and moved to Hollywood, the mecca of plastic surgery. It seemed like a last-ditch effort to breathe new life into an aging show. Having watched the first two episodes, I'm pleasantly surprised to say: It worked.
"Nip/Tuck" is thriving in its new locale, even if the McNamara/Troy practice is not. The two best buds are living together, but they have few patients to suture. That begins to change when they meet a publicist (Lauren Hutton) who starts pushing clients their way, including an actress (Daphne Zuniga), whom Hollywood suits have deemed too old for the lead in big-screen romantic comedies, including one she's desperate for that would have her play a "single-mother coal miner with an autistic child."
Murphy said that notion of temptation and retaining one's identity will be the thematic thrust of the show's fifth season. SHERMAN OAKS, Calif. -- According to the celebrity news Web site TMZ,Television host and actor Gary Collins was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving in Sherman Oaks following a collision that police said was caused by the other motorist, an 89-year-old man.
Collins, 69, was booked for misdemeanor driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs following the crash, which occurred at about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Kester Avenue and Morrison Street, said Los Angeles police Officer April Harding. Collins was released late Tuesday night after posting $40,000 bail, according to the sheriff's department. He was not at fault in the accident," Harding said. "The other motorist failed to yield to oncoming traffic and collided with Collins' vehicle."
The 2004 Ford Explorer that Collins was driving then crashed into two parked cars, Harding said.
"Officers smelled alcohol on his breath and initiated a field sobriety test, which he failed," Harding said.
The other motorist was taken to a hospital for examination of unspecified injuries, and the investigation was continuing, Harding said. Collins was uninjured, Harding said.

One of the co-founder of Studio Bones, Hiroshi Osaka, passed away in Japan this week at the age of 44 due to cancer. Osaka served as animation director for many famous anime series like G Gundam, Escaflowne, Cowboy Bebop, & Macross Plus, as well as former NebsTV series FullMetal Alchemist & Ouran High School Host Club. A sad loss, indeed. Ōsaka was an anime fan as far back as high school, when he emulated the style of the first Mobile Suit Gundam series and the works of Mitsuru Adachi (Touch, H2). Ōsaka began working in Japanese animation as a part-time job while he still taking university classes in Kyoto in 1983. He started in Anime R, a subcontracting studio, under the tutelage of Moriyasu Taniguchi (character designer on Aoki Ryusei SPT Layzner, Armor Hunter Mellowlink). He gradually moved from animation of in-between cels to animation of key cels and eventually animation direction on Sei Jūshi Bismarck (Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs), City Hunter 3, Yoroiden Samurai Trooper (Ronin Warriors), Macross Plus, and Golden Boy. The collaboration between Ōsaka, Minami, and Gundam 0083/Bebop character designer Toshihiro Kawamoto was so fruitful that the three left their respective companies to be the co-founders of the studio BONES in 1998. The three would work together of several fan favorite works of BONES, including Cowboy Bebop: The Movie, Wolf's Rain, and Fullmetal Alchemist.

Lofton grew up in conditions of extreme poverty. His mother was a teenager when he was born, and his father did not take part in his upbringing. Lofton was born prematurely, and weighed three pounds at birth - he was so small that his mother was afraid to hold him.
Lofton taken admission in Washington High School in East Chicago, Indiana, where he was a standout basketball and baseball player for the Senators. He was particularly noted for his skills on the basketball court, for which he was aggressively recruited, having averaged 17 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 steals per game his senior year. He accepted a basketball scholarship to the University of Arizona.
In college, he was the backup point guard (to Steve Kerr) on an Arizona Wildcats team that made it to the Final Four of the 1988 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament, and he set season and career school records for steals. He was the starting point guard the following year as Arizona made it to the Sweet Sixteen. Lofton is one of only two men to play in a college basketball Final Four (1988, the first for the Arizona Wildcats) and a Major League Baseball World Series.
Lofton decided to try out for the baseball team during his junior year. Although he did not see much playing time, his speed and potential were recognized by baseball scouts, and he was chosen by the Houston Astros in the 17th round of Major League Baseball's 1988 amateur draft. He played minor league baseball during the summer while completing his basketball eligibility at Arizona.

The three finalists, Dale, Hung and Casey, are waking up to a new morning in Aspen. They're all very excited to be there, and Casey says she's having trouble catching her breath because of the high altitude. They all gather for breakfast, only to find a Top Chef notecard - with lift tickets inside. Off to the mountain!
Padma calls them back - on the stage and then we cut to Chicago for the finale, where the judges are wearing the same outfits they were wearing in Aspen. Did Bravo pay for dry-cleaning? The finalists come out to the cheers of audience members.
The judges thank the finalists for their hard work and spirit of competition. Tom asks them what they think of the show, now that they've seen it. Dale is happy, since he cooked his heart out and says that they're all winners. Casey, as sort of loosey-goosey as ever, "accepts" that this wasn't her challenge and says he told Hung and Dale that she had been kicking their ass for a while - to big laughs. Hung says he's nervous and that they're all great chefs.
Tom tells Casey what she knows - she's a fierce competitor but not winning; still she's a great chef. He tells Dale that he's glad he found his inner chef and that his menu was wonderful and his cooking is full of confidence. Hung is told that he came in a great technician and married it with passion. Tom leaves the Top Chef winner announcement to Padma... who says "Congratulations...HUNG! You're our Top Chef!"
A lot of crying and bounding around and hugs between the finalists and judges. Padma sticks a microphone in front of Hung, who says "I'm so excited. I worked so hard to get here and to prove myself. I had so much support for America. I'm speechless, but you'll be hearing more from me later." America - not all bad!

China will wipe out all poultry at a village near the city of Guangzhou in southern China after a recent outbreak of the H5N1 strain of the avian flu virus, the South China Morning Post reported, citing a local official. Guangzhou vice-mayor Su Zequn said more than 100,000 birds would be destroyed to prevent the virus from spreading. Hong Kong Health Secretary York Chow yesterday said the special administrative region, which borders Guangdong province where Guangzhou is located, has imposed a 21-day ban on imports of all live poultry, eggs and chilled or frozen meat from farms near the outbreak site.
This is fantastic YouTube clip which is getting lots of attention of people and media, and as much as I hate giving more valuable bytes to the human spiral of self-destruction that is former pop-tart Britney Spears, this one’s worth a look. But it is my thinking that it is not real video which is doing comedy so you can say it is just comedy show. I thought it was legit when I first saw it, but watching his other videos makes me think it’s a very clever piss-take.If it is, it’s brilliant. If it’s not, the guy’s nuts, And yes, as far as I can tell, it is a he. Fooled me too at first, but the stubble really is a giveaway.
