"I Want to Know What Love Is" is a power ballad recorded by the British-American rock band Foreigner. This song is, alongside "Urgent" and "Waiting for a Girl Like You", one of the band's best known songs.
Written by Mick Jones and produced by him and Alex Sadkin, it was the first single released from the album Agent Provocateur (1984). The song features backing vocals from the New Jersey Mass Choir , Dreamgirls star Jennifer Holliday, and the Thompson Twins.
It reached number one in the UK Singles Chart on January 13, 1985, and stayed there for three weeks. It reached the top of the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 on February 2, 1985, where it stayed for two weeks. It was Foreigner's only chart-topper in both countries.
In 2004 it was voted #476 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 greatest songs of all time.
Soon after Foreigner's single topped the charts, the New Jersey Mass Choir released its own, similar-sounding version of the song, on the album I Want to Know What Love Is". It peaked at #37.
